You can walk into many churches today, and you will find many men that are not active members or not there at all. Somehow in many families the wife/mother is expected to drag everyone to Church every Sunday morning. In some instances you will find the husband/father professing to be a Christian, but models it’s okay not be actively engaging with a local body of believers. If you are a man, husband, or father that professes to be a follower of Christ it’s time to MAN UP and lead your family to a local Church. I will give you three vital reasons why it’s time for you to step up.

You Are Called to Lead

“But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God,” 1 Corinthians 11:3.

All men adopted into God’s family through Christ are called to lead their households as servant leaders with love and not be merciless dictators. First things first you must be a man who relentlessly seeks, thirsts, and hungers for God. When you seek God first then you will learn from the perfect leader how to become a better leader. When you consistently study God’s Word, pray, love others, and stay committed to serving in a local church it will be easier to make the case to your family they should be doing the same things. On the contrary if you’re not consistent in these areas you have very little to no influence over your family doing these things necessary for a fruitful life as a Christian.

You Have a Specific Purpose in God’s Plan

“Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand,” Proverbs 19:21.

God has graciously included you in His plan to bring Him glory, and the truth is He didn’t have to include any of us. Every single breath we breathe is an evidence of God’s grace in our lives, and He gave us this breath to give Him praise and to glorify Him with our lives. God made you in His image, He made you male, He gave you new Life through Christ, and He gives you authority and help to take full responsibility to the family entrusted to you.

You also have an important role to play in the local Church, and you bring unique qualities to the local body that no one else can bring because God made us all unique. When we as men decide to create our own plans without submitting them to God we are committing a huge mistake. Our hearts become puffed up with pride because our actions are saying, “God, thanks but no thanks I can handle things on my own.” I challenge you to seek God’s revealed will for your life, and ask for His help to carry it out in your daily life.

Your Actions Matter

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves," James 1:22.

You should not just go to a local Church, but rather you should belong to a local Church. The word belong helps to create a kind of ownership that insinuates you will be an active participant and not just a spectator. Church membership is also important because it helps to say this is where I belong for this specific time for God’s specific purpose. Being an active member in your local church conveys some things of importance such as:

  • I’m choosing to be obedient to God by not neglecting to meet with His people.
  • I’m comitted to carrying out the one another commands of the Bible with this specific group of people.
  • God’s family is a priority in my life.
  • I give you permissions to hold me accountable to my profession as a Christian.
  • I’m not being forced to gather with my brothers and sisters in Christ, but it’s a privilege to get to meet.
  • I am a follower of Christ, I love God, and I care about His people.

and the list could go on and on.

On the contrary if you make many excuses for not corporately gathering with other believers, and you rather only seek God in isolation then think about what message that conveys. The Christian life is not to be lived in isolation, and I know this from first-hand experience. Consider this, Christ, who is God incarnate lived His life with others, and He is the only human that has lived and will live that could have spent His entire earthly life in isolation while remaining sinless. I’m compelled to say we need other members of the body more than we want to admit, and Christ modeled this perfectly for us.

In Closing

Brothers, God has granted you a special responsibility to lead your family well. The time we have with our families are very brief on this earth, so now is the perfect time to start making the most of the times. Passive church engagement or church absence does not convey a heart of obedience to God through the freedom we have through Christ. Being a member of a local Church does not make you a Christian, but genuine obedience or prideful disobedience to Christ helps to shape the local Church as we know it. I pray you will seek God and other brothers on how you can lead your family well by overall submission to the will of God in your life.

Be in prayer for me and other men that we will lead our families well because godly men are desperately needed in our homes, churches, and communities. I love you with the love of Christ, and please message me if I can encourage you in any way!

Grace and Peace,

Donnie G.
