Yes, you read the title correctly pornography is not the problem. In the same way the car itself is not the cause of a fatal accident by an intoxicated driver or guns are not the problem when used in a violent homicide. All of these have something in common they point to a bigger issue. In the case of pornography the problem isn’t pornography itself, but the problem is our hearts.

How Can it be My Heart?

I’m glad you asked. When I say heart I don’t mean the organ that pumps blood throughout your body. What I mean is the central most inner part of your life or digging even deeper your spiritual core that pump thoughts and sensations throughout your entire body. What fuels your longing to indulge in pornography and masturbation points back to an issue of your heart which can be different for all of us. Heart issues are things such pride, insecurities, lust, jealousy, entitlement, selfishness, bitterness, wrongful hate, and I could go on for a long time. To simplify things a bit all of our heart issues can be lumped into the category of Sin.

What is Sin?

I’m glad you asked again. Majority of us hear the word sin tossed around all the time, but when I hear people answer the question “what is sin?” I hear all types of answers. For instance, I’ve heard sin is doing something bad, making God upset, following the devil, not living right, or turning your back on God just to name a few. For the sake of time and argument we will look at sin as two categories:

1. Inherited/Imputed/Original Sin: Every human to ever be born minus Jesus have inherited sin from the disobedience of Adam and Eve (Genesis 3). This makes us automatically sinners at conception, and this is the reason we are seen as corrupt in God’s eyes.

2. Personal Sin: Being that we have inherited sin from Adam and Eve, we all commit all types of personal sin from little white lies to the most horrendous murders.

What Does This Have to do With My Pornography Problem?

Let’s look at it this way we know sin is the root of our unrighteous standing with God, this sin drives us to do many things that are at the core heart issues, then we act upon these things in ways unpleasing in God’s sight, and the only way we can be restored to a righteous standing with God is through Jesus Christ alone. If you are a believer in Jesus Christ, and has accepted Him as your personal Lord and savior you probably already know this. My question to the believer in Christ is what heart issue(s) is/are driving you to pornography, and are you taking these issues to God and confessing them to the brothers you trust?

I struggled with pornography and masturbation for about 16 years of my life, and in the next post I will explain my struggles, mistakes, and breakthrough from those addictions.
